The brief
Fieldnote publishes long essays about people who make things well. The founding team wanted an identity that could live for decades — no trend-chasing, no rebrand every three issues. The brief fit on an index card: make it feel inevitable.
The approach
We built the system around a single custom-modified serif and a strict two-colour rule: ink, paper, and one seasonal accent per issue. The grid borrows from mid-century field guides — numbered sections, ruled dividers, generous margins that invite marginalia.
The outcome
Fieldnote grew to 25,000 subscribers in forty countries without spending a cent on advertising. The identity system has survived twelve issues unchanged — which was, in the end, the entire brief.
